Some people think that scientific research should be carried out and controlled by governments rather than private companies. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some people criticize that governments have the full right and the responsibility to supervise scientific research. However, others argue that it can constitute an infringement on private companies' freedom to conduct research. I would agree that private institutions have the prerogative to do their research independently, but governments have to take control of several sensitive sectors.

It has become fashionable for research in critical sectors to be organized by governments, especially in military and defence companies. This is because the production of destructive weapons should be strictly regulated by governments to prevent them from doing something that can threaten public safety. For instance, harmful weapons such as nuclear and chemical weapons can violate human rights. Lockheed Martin serves as a pertinent example of how private companies conduct research under the government's supervision. While Lockheed is a private company, the United States government is its main customer.

On the other hand, proponents argue that private companies have the full right to conduct research without government intervention. Some people believe that governments can hamper the research processes because of the strict regulations, even though it is not a critical sector. For instance, a company is unable to build a research lab because it would have to pay expensive taxes to the government. Therefore, authorities should give freedom to companies to do scientific research.

To conclude, companies have the right to conduct research without governments’ intervention, which can make the research process more difficult. However, some sectors should be strictly observed to keep public safety.
